Charge Your Electric Vehicle at Home!

Options for At-Home Car Charging Station

EV drivers have two primary types of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) to choose from:

  • A Level 1 charger lets you plug your car directly into a standard 120V electrical outlet. This is no different from plugging in any home appliance or power tool, and no special equipment is required. In fact, your electric or hybrid vehicle should come with a standard three-prong household plug to facilitate Level 1 charging. Be aware that you will need a dedicated branch circuit for the outlet you plug your car into. If the outlet shares a circuit with another high-powered appliance, such as the air conditioner or refrigerator, the circuit will trip, unable to support two large loads at once. Fortunately, the electricians at Pingston Electric can easily upgrade your electrical panel with the necessary dedicated circuit.

  • Level 2 EVSE refers to chargers using a 240V dedicated circuit. These chargers are usually installed in garages, though they can be installed virtually anywhere. Level 2 equipment is substantially more powerful, and is the most suitable option for fast, convenient electric car charging. Most homes already have 240V service for clothes dryers and electric ranges, making installation relatively inexpensive and straightforward.

Identifying your needs is the most crucial step in charging your electric car at home. While many people are fine with charging their car overnight with a level 1 charger, many prefer the flexibility provided by a level 2 charger.

All EVSE installations must comply with local, state, and national safety codes, so make sure you work with a licensed electrician for the job.
